TI-RADS (Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System) and BI-RADS (Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System) are classification systems that help us, doctors, standardize and simplify the interpretation of ultrasound exams for the thyroid and breast. These systems were developed to improve diagnostic accuracy and ensure consistent approaches in image assessment.
TI-RADS is used to evaluate nodules in the thyroid gland. This system assesses characteristics such as nodule size, structure, presence of calcifications, and other features. TI-RADS classifies nodules into risk levels ranging from low to high. This classification allows us to more accurately predict the likelihood of malignancy and make informed decisions about further actions. For example, high-risk nodules often require additional testing or a biopsy.
BI-RADS is applied to breast imaging and also classifies ultrasound results into risk levels, which simplifies decisions about the need for additional tests or a biopsy. The BI-RADS system categorizes images into groups from 0 to 6, with each group reflecting the degree of suspicion for breast cancer. For instance, categories 4 and above generally indicate that further examination is needed to rule out or confirm cancer.
Modern guidelines, such as those from the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the European Society of Radiology (ESR), emphasize the importance of using TI-RADS and BI-RADS to standardize diagnosis and treatment. These systems help improve overall diagnostic accuracy and reduce the number of incorrect diagnoses.
