    Why Does Pain Persist Even When Test Results Are Normal?

    What Is Central Sensitization?

    Imagine a smoke alarm.

    Under normal circumstances, it activates only when there is a real fire. However, if it becomes overly sensitive, it may start going off because of steam, cooking, or even a small amount of smoke.

    The nervous system can behave in a very similar way.

    Following prolonged inflammation, injury, or repeated episodes of pain, the brain and spinal cord become increasingly sensitive to pain signals.

    • medications that modulate pain processing, such as amitriptyline, duloxetine, venlafaxine, or gabapentinoids, when clinically indicated
    • treatment of coexisting anxiety or depression when present.

    For most patients, the best outcomes are achieved through a combination of therapies rather than a single intervention.

    Can the Pain Completely Go Away?

    In many cases, yes.

    However, recovery from chronic pain usually takes time.

    If pain has persisted for months or years, the nervous system also needs time to reduce its heightened sensitivity.

    That is why successful treatment involves more than simply prescribing medication. Pelvic floor rehabilitation, regular physical activity, healthy sleep, and lifestyle modifications are all important components of recovery.
